Why "free" games make the most money

The highest-earning games in the world are free to download. That is not a contradiction. It is the whole strategy.

Fortnite is free. Most top mobile games are free. They make billions through what you buy after you start playing: skins, battle passes, currency, loot boxes. The model leans on a small group of players, sometimes called "whales," who spend a lot. Most players spend nothing, and that is fine, because the few big spenders cover everyone. "Free" gets the maximum number of people through the door. The design then gently and constantly nudges towards spending.

Translation: When something is free, the thing being sold is usually you, or rather your attention and the chance that you will spend. A free game is not a gift. It is the top of a very well-designed funnel.

Ask yourself
When a game costs nothing to start, ask how it actually makes its money, and from whom. The answer tells you what the game is really designed to do, which is usually not only to entertain you.

Two ways to see it

For: millions get to play for free and pay nothing, which is genuinely generous to most players.

Against: the model is engineered to convert spenders, and it leans hardest on the people least able to control it.
